FAQs
Who is responsible for the content contained in the database?
David Daniels, Music Director of the Warren Symphony and formerly Professor of Music
at Oakland University, writes, compiles, updates, corrects, and maintains the Orchestral
Music database. The content is based on the 4th edition of
Orchestral Music, a reference
book published by Scarecrow Press and used by orchestra professionals around the world.
What's new on line?
This web application includes the hundreds of additions, changes, and corrections
to the database made since the publication of the 4th edition of
Orchestral Music in 2005.
What are the advantages of using Orchestral Music Online?
Sophisticated capabilities of the database permit searches that are much more
focused than those found in the appendices of the book. Also, users can copy data
and paste it into rehearsal schedules and other documents, saving time and effort.
How does this new edition compare with the old?
There are over 6,700 entries, compared with about 4200 in the 3rd edition. The
database includes over 900 composers.
What characterizes the 4th edition?
For the first time, the compilation of information in David Daniels' database
has been combined with OLIS (see below).
What's OLIS?
OLIS (Orchestra Library Information Service) was created in the early 1980's, by
ASOL (American Symphony Orchestra League), with Marshall Burlingame as principal
researcher. At first an index card format, it was soon computerized. By the 1990's,
however, it began to suffer from lack of both maintenance and updating.
